* Bryan Cantwell, 29, has been named to replace Jeff Young as boys’ coach at Chaminade. Cantwell has been Young’s top assistant for seven years. Young resigned to pursue college coaching.

* Cecil Brown of Canoga Park and Michael Charleston of Grant were selected co-players of the year in the Sunset Six League.

* Jacquana Young of Antelope Valley (26-3) was selected most valuable player of the Golden League. Young, a forward, averaged 13 points and 11 rebounds.

* Marissa Meadows of Valencia and Brusta Brown of Saugus were chosen co-most valuable players in the Foothill League. Meadows, a senior forward, and Brown, a senior guard, helped their teams to the league co-championship.

MOTORSPORTS

* The spirit of Dale Earnhardt, seven-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion who was killed in a last-lap crash during the Daytona 500 on Feb. 18, will be evident in the NAPA 300 NASCAR Winston West series race today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Ron Hornaday Jr., the former Palmdale resident who entered the national spotlight in 1995 when he was hired to drive an entry owned by Earnhardt in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck series, is entered.

Hornaday’s replacement with the Earnhardt team, Daytona 500 champion Michael Waltrip, also is entered.

Waltrip, who had not won a Winston Cup race in 462 starts before his victory at Daytona in the same race Earnhardt was killed, was chosen to replace Hornaday in a car sponsored by NAPA Auto Parts when Earnhardt decided to move the entry to Winston Cup from the NASCAR Busch Grand National Division series this year.

Sean Woodside of Saugus, 1999 Winston West champion who is also sponsored by NAPA, is honoring Earnhardt by painting his car black, using the same type of lettering made famous on Earnhardt’s No. 3 Winston Cup entry owned by Richard Childress.
