A 26-year-old man was wounded early Monday after he was fired on while driving past a New Year’s gathering in Santa Ana, police said.

Ricardo Castro of Santa Ana was treated and released from UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was being treated for minor cuts and bruises from a gunshot that brushed his back.

Police said he was driving past a crowd of about five partygoers standing in the street in the 1000 block of West 3rd Street at about 1:41 a.m.

Castro told police three shots came from the direction of the men. One bullet pierced the rear passenger door of his car before grazing Castro in the back, Santa Ana Police Sgt. Alan Caddell said. The man drove to his home several blocks away and called police.

Caddell said by the time police arrived, everyone had left. The shooting was not believed to be gang-related, he said.
