Utah Coach Rick Majerus was admitted to a Salt Lake City hospital Monday after experiencing chest pains. Majerus, 52, who has a history of heart problems, was admitted to LDS Hospital as a precaution, according to a university news release.

Preliminary tests on Majerus’ heart have been normal, but the coach will undergo a coronary angiogram today, a school spokesman said.

No timetable has been set for his return to the Utes. Majerus has been away from the team for six weeks while recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery on his right knee. He had planned to return to the team practices Monday. “Maybe it was just the excitement over coming back to the team. We’ll know more [today],” Lageschulte said. Dick Hunsaker, who has filled in for Majerus for the last 12 games, will continue to serve as acting head coach.

Xavier junior transfer Khalil Nixon, who averaged 1.2 points this season, left the team and intends to withdraw from the university, the school reported. The university did not disclose the reason. . . . Michigan State remained No. 1 in the Associated Press college basketball poll for a second consecutive week and the top 11 teams stayed in the same order. The only new entry in the rankings was No. 24 Texas.
