A school bus carrying 28 students from Rose Avenue Elementary School was rear-ended by a car Tuesday afternoon, but there were no injuries.

The collision occurred about 3:30 p.m. at Poplar and San Marino streets as the schoolchildren were being driven home, according to California Highway Patrol officers.

The bus driver was preparing to make a right turn onto San Marino Street from Poplar Street when it was struck from behind by a 1999 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Juan Jimenez Jr., 18, of Oxnard, officers said.

Jimenez told authorities he was taking his brother, Julio, 8, to get ice cream. He said he dropped coins on the car floor and leaned down to retrieve the money.

Although Jimenez was traveling at a low rate of speed, the impact crunched the car’s hood and shattered the windshield. The bus was not damaged.

The children were transferred to a second bus that was sent to the scene.
