An 18-wheeler that flew past a Bakersfield weigh station Tuesday night led authorities on a 2 1/2-hour chase that ended at an Ontario shipping yard.

The driver, a 51-year-old Pomona man, apparently ignored dozens of police cars and helicopters because he was late returning the rig to the yard where he worked, the owner told the CHP.

“When he finally arrived with the rig, the police were waiting for him,” said CHP Officer Rosa Ray.

Illuminated by helicopter spotlights, the big rig lumbered along several freeways, occasionally exiting onto surface streets.

In general, the driver obeyed traffic laws, stopping for red lights, edging past stop signs and proceeding at or below posted speed limits. He even made skillful turns, taking up 1 1/2 lanes to keep from rolling over curbs.

The chase that began about 8 p.m. ended when the driver pulled into a truck yard near Ontario Airport and casually surrendered to CHP officers who approached with guns drawn.
