LPGA Has Interest in Mesa Verde

Mesa Verde Country Club in Costa Mesa is on the short list of courses the LPGA Tour is courting to host the City of Hope LPGA Classic. But Mesa Verde head professional Tom Sargent said he doesn’t expect the membership to approve the tournament.

The City of Hope Classic, scheduled for April 12-15, is on the LPGA Tour schedule but does not have a home. Mesa Verde hosted the LPGA Women’s Kemper Open from 1979-81 and the Uniden LPGA Invitational from 1984-86 and the Senior PGA Tour used Mesa Verde for the Toshiba Senior Classic in 1995.

“We have been contacted but a decision hasn’t been made yet,” Sargent said. “There are only a few months to go before the tournament and I don’t think it would be approved because of that. It’s a lot of work and planning putting something like that together.”

Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park also was contacted but declined, according to head pro Brad Shupe.
