Antelope Valley, which went 0-10 in the Golden League last season, is a few points away from being 2-0 against the league favorites this season.

Under first-year Coach Tom Hegre, the Antelopes (7-10, 0-2) led Lancaster by 21 before losing in overtime and were defeated by Quartz Hill on a last-second basket.

“Everybody says for the program’s sake that we are right where we should be,” Hegre said. “But the kids want to win these close games and I want to win these close games. They’re not on the two-year plan.”

La Canada gets another chance to beat a quality opponent tonight.

The Spartans (13-3, 1-0) lost to Notre Dame by a point and trailed Bishop Montgomery by six in the fourth quarter before fading.

Tonight, they host Monrovia in a battle of league favorites. Monrovia has an imposing front line led by 6-foot-7 forward Bryant Markson, the league most valuable player last season.

“We can stay with good teams,” La Canada Coach Tom Hofman said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to beat them.”
