Regional Airport Lands Top-Flight Traffic

Los Angeles World Airports congratulates Long Beach Airport for landing JetBlue service, starting later this summer. We join The Times (“Airport Pact Points the Way,” editorial, May 25) in recognizing this as an important first step by Long Beach in helping to spread the increased demand for air traffic across the region.

We, however, respectfully disagree with The Times that LAWA needs “a goad” to attract more business for airports it owns and operates at Ontario and Palmdale. To the contrary, it was LAWA marketing efforts that first brought JetBlue to Southern California via Ontario International Airport, with nonstop transcontinental jet service last summer. That service has been so successful that JetBlue added a second daily round-trip flight between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Ontario airport in April of this year.

LAWA also brought AeroMexico to Ontario to start regular service to Guadalajara and Mexico City and strongly supported United Parcel Service in its successful bid to start daily service from Ontario to Beijing.

We are delighted with JetBlue’s success at Ontario and urge other airports (those operating now and others in the planning stages) in the region to accept their fair share of the region’s growing air traffic demand. We will continue to do our part to attract other air carriers to begin or add service at Ontario and Palmdale. It must be recognized, however, that with a deregulated industry, airlines make the choice of which areas they will serve.
