Foothill Tops Mater Dei in Volleyball
Foothill earned a key early-season victory Thursday night, sweeping Mater Dei, 15-9, 15-12, 16-14, in a nonleague boys’ volleyball match at Foothill.
Matt Daniels and Kevin Logan had 24 kills each and setter Ryan Burgess had 58 assists for the Knights, ranked 10th in The Times’ preseason poll.
Mater Dei (0-1) is ranked second in the poll.
In another nonleague match:
Santa Margarita 3, Laguna Beach 1--Blake Robinson had 22 kills and Damien Scott had 17 for visiting Santa Margarita, which won, 15-8, 15-6, 14-16, 15-8.
In nonleague badminton:
Fullerton 11, Marina 8--Fullerton swept mixed doubles and boys’ doubles. James Trinh and Kristin Torres won key singles matches to seal the victory for Fullerton (2-0).
In nonleague boys’ golf:
Orange Lutheran 183, Canyon 204--Orange Lutheran’s Paul Imondi had three birdies and finished with a three-under 32 at Willowick.
In nonleague boys’ tennis:
Corona del Mar 10, L.A. Loyola 8--Cameron Ball, playing No. 1 singles, swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for the Sea Kings in their season opener at UCLA. Garrett Snyder lost only one game in his sweep for Corona del Mar (1-0).
Irvine 16, Edison 2--Eric Aarnaes and John Park didn’t lose a game in singles, and the doubles team of Jon Wang and Andrew Wang dropped only one game.
Laguna Beach 15, El Toro 3--Laguna Beach senior Michael Roguly began his third year as the Artists’ No. 1 singles player by sweeping, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Jonathan Bernard and sophomore Andrew Jhenender swept, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles for the host Artists (1-0).
Villa Park 16, Katella 2--Rudy Jimenez was perfect through three singles sets, and the doubles team of Mike Liang and Albert Jou lost only one game in three sets for host Villa Park (1-0).
In nonleague boys’ track and field:
Woodbridge 77, Santa Ana 54--Favie Lochananonda won the shotput (49-8) and discus (153-4) for Woodbridge.
In nonleague girls’ track and field:
Corona del Mar 103, Calvary Chapel 16--Julie Allen won the 800 (2:27.4) and 1,600 (5:13.7) and Allison Brawner cleared 5-4 to win the high jump for Corona del Mar.
