Taliban Destruction
* I appreciated very much your March 2 editorial, “Godless Acts.” I have been so saddened by the report that the Taliban is destroying the incredible Buddhas in the Bamian province of Afghanistan. My two brothers and I traveled to Bamian in the summer of 1975. We came down a dry and dusty road into the green Bamian Valley and were struck by the sight of the two Buddhas carved in the side of the cliff. We hiked to the top of the cliff and looked out on the valley, over the top of the head of the Buddha. These were powerful moments--whatever your spiritual preference. The memories have stayed with me. It is incredibly sad to think the Taliban forces are destroying their country’s treasures.

How wonderful to read that the Taliban forces have begun destroying priceless works of art and other antiquities, as they have been determined by the minister of vice and virtue to be an insult to Islam. We can only hope that these ignorant and intolerant morons will next destroy themselves on the grounds of their being an insult to humanity.
