Bertrand W. Lee; Retired Citrus Farm Advisor
Bertrand “Bud” Wayne Lee, a retired citrus farm advisor, has died at the age of 81.
Lee, who died March 2 at a Ventura hospital, was born Jan. 3, 1920, in Los Angeles and was raised in Pomona with two brothers and two sisters.
He was a lieutenant in the Coast Guard during World War II and attended UC Berkeley after his discharge.
A 32-year employee of the University Cooperative Extension, he moved to Ventura County in 1957, where he served as citrus farm advisor. In 1966, he was appointed county director and farm advisor for Ventura County Extension, assuming the administrative office as well as fieldwork.
Lee was published more than 105 times in various publications. He received the California Avocado Society Award of Honor in 1973 and the Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding Teaching by the UC Cooperative Extension Assembly Council in 1984.
He was a member of the Downtown Ventura Lions, the Ventura Retired Professional and Businessmen’s Club, Al Malaikah Shrine Temple, San Buenaventura Masonic Lodge No. 214, Ventura Friends of the Library and Scottish Rite Ventura Valley. He was a board member of the California Avocado Commission, honorary member of the California Avocado Society and active member of Ventura Missionary Church.
He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 31 years; two sons, Mike Carroll and Tim Carroll; a foster son, Kenneth Magdleno; three grandchildren and three foster grandchildren.
Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. today at Ventura Missionary Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Charles Carroll Funeral Home, Ventura.
