Sotheby’s to Exhibit Beckman, Miro, Johns, Others Before Sale
Sotheby’s auction house will present highlights of its upcoming major New York sales in an exhibition at the firm’s Beverly Hills showroom Monday and Tuesday.
The star attraction is German Expressionist Max Beckman’s “Self-Portrait with Horn,” valued at $7 million to $10 million. Beckman painted the brooding image in 1938, when he was in exile in Amsterdam as a Nazi-designated “degenerate” artist.
Modern and contemporary works from the collection of Stanley J. Seeger, expected to bring a total of $32 million to $40 million, will also be on view.
They include trademark paintings, valued at $2 million to $6 million apiece, by Francis Bacon, Joan Miro and Jasper Johns.
The free exhibition, at 9665 Wilshire Blvd., will be open Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
