Westlake Can’t Hold 7-Run Lead
Damian Fante hit a three-run home run with two out in the eighth inning to cap a rally from seven runs down Wednesday and give Thousand Oaks High a 10-8 Marmonte League victory over Westlake at Thousand Oaks.
Thousand Oaks beat Westlake for the first time since 1996.
Fante, a junior center fielder, had three hits, including the first home run of his career, and five runs batted in. He hit a two-run double in a five-run seventh.
Ryan McCarthy, Luke Riordan and Cody Sipriano each had two hits for Westlake (4-3-1, 0-1-1 in league), which led, 7-0.
Lancaster 9, Palmdale 1--Right-hander Tyler Bain of Lancaster High was not only looking for his first victory, he was looking for his first decision.
Instead of a no-decision, he provided a no-doubter. Bain pitched a three-hitter and the Eagles pounded 12 hits in a Golden League victory at Palmdale.
Bain, a senior, struck out nine, retired the final 12 batters and struck out the side in the seventh.
He contributed three hits, including a two-run homer in the fifth that gave Lancaster (5-1-1, 2-0) a 4-1 lead.
Palmdale (4-2-1, 1-1) committed four errors and three pitchers failed to solve Lancaster.
The Eagles, ranked No. 4 in the region by The Times, took a 2-1 lead on Josh Pratt’s two-run homer in the fourth.
Lancaster blew the game open with five runs in the sixth, including a three-run homer by Art Ortiz, a transfer from Palmdale.
Quartz Hill 6, Antelope Valley 0--Kyle Blankemeyer (2-1) pitched a one-hitter with four strikeouts for the Rebels (5-3, 2-0) in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.
Blankemeyer yielded a fifth-inning single to Carlos Rosales.
Andy Locke had a run-scoring triple, Dustin Petzold and Shane Gates had run-scoring singles, and Matt Ware and Tyler Simi had sacrifice flies.
Moorpark 10, Simi Valley 0--Bryan Garcia had two hits and drove in four runs for the Musketeers (5-3, 1-1) in a Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.
Tim Penprase added two hits and Robbie Jaegge pitched a six-hitter with four strikeouts and one walk. He also hit a double.
Royal 9, Agoura 8--Pinch-runner Matt Lawyer was thrown out at home for the final out and the Highlanders (8-1, 2-0) won a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
David Talley homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Royal, which led, 8-0.
Chris Denove had a two-run double and Jason Lefkowitz hit a two-run triple for Agoura (6-4, 0-1).
Kennedy 7, Monroe 0--Bobby Phillips pitched a one-hitter and Chad Shaw homered in a Valley Mission League victory for the Cougars (8-2, 2-0) at Monroe.
San Fernando 9, Reseda 5--Jess Moreno and Ruben Nevarez each struck out eight for San Fernando (7-2, 2-0) in a Valley Mission League game at San Fernando. Moreno also hit a three-run triple.
Sylmar 15, Van Nuys 0--Marco Estrada (4-0) pitched a five-inning one-hitter with eight strikeouts in a Valley Mission League game at Sylmar (6-3, 2-0) that was called because of the 10-run rule.
Estrada, who lost the no-hitter with two out in the fourth inning when Abel Pulido doubled for Van Nuys (0-9, 0-2), had two hits including a run-scoring double. Stephen Shaw had a grand slam and a three-run triple.
Newbury Park 13, Oxnard 1--Jacob Evseff had three hits and pitched a six-hitter for the first victory of his career as the Panthers won a nonleague game at Oxnard.
Steve Hartman had three hits and four RBIs and Matt Valenzuela added two hits and three RBIs for Newbury Park (4-3-1).
Montclair Prep 14, Pasadena Poly 7--Kevin Pollack drove in nine runs and the Mounties won a nonleague game at Pasadena Poly.
Pollack, a sophomore who was the winning pitcher, hit two home runs and a double.
Montclair Prep had 20 hits, including four home runs. Stephen Yoo had three hits for the Mounties.
