Grubman Gets Zeroed In and Cleveland Wins
Byron Grubman pitched a five-hitter and Cleveland High won its first West Valley League baseball game in three attempts with a 5-0 victory over El Camino Real on Tuesday at Cleveland.
Grubman (4-1) struck out four and walked two in his third shutout of the season and lowered his earned-run average to 0.50.
Andrew Strickland had two hits, three runs batted in and scored a run for Cleveland (9-3, 1-2 in league play).
El Camino Real is 6-4, 1-2.
Chatsworth 6, Granada Hills 2--Gregg Wallis had two hits and two RBIs for the Chancellors in a West Valley League game at Chatsworth.
Joe Guntz (5-0) settled down after giving up two runs in the first inning, striking out nine, allowing four hits and walking two for Chatsworth (12-0, 3-0), ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times.
Birmingham 15, Taft 2--Jose Avitia had two hits, two RBIs and scored three runs, and the Patriots scored 11 runs in the third inning of a West Valley League game at Taft (1-4, 1-2) that was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Lucio Tapia highlighted the third inning with a two-run double.
Luis Parra had two hits, two RBIs and scored two runs for Birmingham (6-4, 2-1).
Poly 6, North Hollywood 4--Miguel Gomez had two hits and three RBIs for the Parrots (4-3-1, 1-0) in a Sunset Six League victory at Poly.
Canyon 11, Burroughs 5--Jake Coash (4-0) pitched a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts for the Cowboys (5-4-1, 2-2) in a Foothill League victory at Canyon.
Hart 10, Saugus 0--Chris Burrows (4-0) allowed one hit in five innings, and Mike Miller had two hits and drove in three runs in a Foothill League game at Hart.
Chris Gagnon added two hits and two RBIs for Hart (11-0, 4-0), ranked No. 2.
Calabasas 10, Nordhoff 4--John Henry Jacobs had three hits and scored three runs to help the Coyotes win a Frontier League game at Nordhoff.
Mike Benford hit a two-run double and drove in another run with a sacrifice fly for Calabasas (7-3, 3-0).
Justin Segal (3-1) left the game in the sixth inning with a cramp in his right calf. He allowed five hits and four earned runs while striking out nine and walking four.
La Canada 5, South Pasadena 3--Jesse Hirdler pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and tripled home a run for the Spartans (8-2, 3-1) in a Rio Hondo League victory at La Canada.
Glendale 4, Arcadia 1--Kevin Hickcox (2-1) pitched a five-hitter and recorded his second complete game as the Dynamiters won a Pacific League game at Glendale.
Eric Guardado put Glendale (6-3, 2-1) ahead for good, 3-1, by hitting a two-run single in the third.
Camarillo 8, Rio Mesa 1--Brad Boyer’s two-run double highlighted an eight-run fifth inning in a Pacific View League game at Camarillo.
Travis Sutton and Justin Frash hit two-run singles in the fifth for Camarillo (9-3, 5-0).
Zac Haines and Anthony Digas each had two hits for Rio Mesa (7-3, 2-1).
Notre Dame 5, Alemany 5--The Indians’ Josh Marx scored on a throwing error to tie the score in the seventh inning of a Mission League game at Alemany.
The game was called after eight innings because of darkness.
L.A. Baptist 18, Pasadena Marshall 2--Andrew Petersen hit two home runs, a double, a single and drove in six runs for the Knights (8-2) in an Alpha League opener at Pasadena Marshall.
