Irvine Outlasts Newport to Win in Boys’ Volleyball
Newport Harbor, ranked seventh in the county, extended fifth-ranked Irvine to five games before falling, 15-5, 15-11, 6-15, 9-15, 17-15, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Tuesday at Irvine High.
UCLA-bound outside hitter Kris Kraushaar and Zach Jardine each had 27 kills and 20 digs to lead the Vaqueros (6-1, 1-0), who almost blew a 2-0 lead in games and an 11-3 lead in the fifth game.
USC-bound outside hitter Blake Tippett, who returned from an ankle injury, had 24 kills to help the Sailors (2-4, 0-1) fight off three match points in Game 5 to tie it, 14-14 and 15-15 before a kill by Jardine and a block by Jay Jensen ended it for Irvine.
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 3, Cypress 0--David Patten had 28 kills for the Golden Hawks (6-3, 1-0), who won, 15-1, 15-2, 15-12. Cypress is 0-1 in league.
In Century League baseball:
El Modena 5, Foothill 4--Kurt Angier drove in the winning run with a two-run triple and James Girolamo had two doubles and two RBIs for host El Modena (5-6, 2-2).
In the Pacific Coast League:
Corona del Mar 6, University 5--Andrew John’s two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the difference for host Corona del Mar (7-3, 4-0).
In South Coast League boys’ golf:
Dana Hills 200, No. 7 San Clemente 207--Casey Strohsal posted the medalist score of 35 at El Niguel for San Clemente (5-3, 1-2). Jonathan Foster and Bryce Peters led Dana Hills (4-2, 2-0) with 39.
In the Sunset League:
No. 6 Marina 179, No. 4 Esperanza 191--Sophomore Daniel Chin had four birdies and five pars to shoot a four-under 31 at Meadowlark for Marina (8-0, 2-0). Sophomore Mike Zaniboni was one over at 36.
In nonleague softball:
Capistrano Valley 1, No. 6 Esperanza 0--Left fielder Danielle Ross was two for three and scored the winning run from second on a bunt by Jennifer Sciacqua in the bottom of the seventh inning for Capistrano Valley (9-2-1).
El Toro 1, No. 5 Marina 0--Danielle Quimby singled to open the fifth inning, was sacrificed to second, moved to third on an infield single by Stephanie Churchwell and scored the only run on a single by Mandy Eamello for El Toro (9-4). Robyn Ford-Feitz picked up the win with five strikeouts. Marina is 6-2.
No. 3 Kennedy 2, Huntington Beach 0--Brook Porter had a two-run double in the third inning for Kennedy (7-2).
Los Alamitos 1, No. 8 Rosary 0--Lynsey Farina pitched a two-hitter and Merissa Hearn drove in Brittany Murphy with the game’s only run for the Griffins (3-6). Rosary is 6-5.
