Big Apple to Be Ferret-Friendly
From Times Wire Reports
New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani wanted to put the bite on a City Council measure to legalize ferret ownership, but friends of the furry weasel prevailed by a hair.
The 26-13 vote, with seven abstentions, was just enough to provide the majority needed in the 51-member council to overturn the longtime ban on keeping ferrets as pets.
In the end, Kathryn Freed, the Manhattan Democrat who sponsored the ferret-friendly bill, basked in her victory, as did six or seven ferret lovers standing in the balcony. Giuliani has promised to veto the measure.
