In the Division III preliminaries:
Yelsey shines--Corona del Mar senior Josh Yelsey had the top qualifying time the 3,200 meters at Trabuco Hills High. Yelsey finished in 9 minutes 25.32 seconds, establishing a personal best by 16 seconds.
Yelsey also won his 1,600 heat in 4:20.26, the second-fastest qualifying time behind Big Bear’s Ryan Hall (4:12.99).
Ocean View senior Eric Van Aken had the top qualifying time in the 400, covering the one-lap event in 49.73. He also qualified in the 200 (22.57), as did teammate Torin Beeler in the high jump and long jump.
Corona del Mar junior Julie Allen was the top qualifier in the 1,600, finishing in 5:05.95. Rosary senior Christy Arnerich finished behind Allen in a season-best 5:07.44. Corona del Mar senior Diana Hossfeld won the other heat in 5:11.67, leading La Habra junior Ava Jones across the line (5:12.87).
The Sea Kings qualified three in the 800. Hossfeld won her heat in 2:21.12, Allen finished second in her heat in 2:19.97 and Jenny Cummins finished runner-up in her heat in 2:23.31, grabbing the second-to-last qualifying spot.
Allen also had the top qualifying time in the 3,200, cruising with Jones for six laps before pulling away and winning her heat in 11:05.09. Jones finished second in 11:08.11, the second-fastest qualifying time.
