Night on the Town: On Friday night, if I were with my family, I might go to one of our favorite restaurants in town, the Water Grill in downtown. I think it’s become one of the best restaurants in the city, and it’s got wonderful ambience. I spend a lot of time downtown, mostly because I tend to be working there more often. Maybe we’d also see a play at the Mark Taper Forum or another theater.
Explore L.A.: One of the things I’ve always loved about L.A. is the canyons--hiking and walking in the canyons. If it’s a beautiful weekend, I drive along Mulholland Drive, which is spectacular. One of the things I love to do is explore parts of the city I never got to know growing up on the Westside. Recently I was in Leimert Park, an amazing part of L.A. I didn’t know at all. It’s the cultural center of African American L.A., and it’s got a sort of quaintness the rest of the city has lost.
Watching Someone Else Work: Being a musician, I hardly get to go to concerts, so Saturday night I’d go hear the L.A. Philharmonic, one of the great orchestras in the world. And in a few years we’ll all be able to hear them at the Disney Hall, which will be one of the great concert halls in the world.
Secret Sushi: There’s a great sushi bar on Beverly Boulevard that stays open late that not too many people know about, Shibucho. It’s a great treat, and really tiny, and we can go there after a concert or work because they stay open until midnight I think. The chef there does stuff you won’t find at any other sushi bar.
American Pastime: I love going to Dodger games, though I don’t get much chance to. I didn’t go for probably 25 years and just recently I’ve had the opportunity to go on a couple of occasions. That’s a great way for me to completely chill out. And it’s such a beautiful park, too.
