Mexico Suspends Rail Service Due to Accidents
Fed up with accidents between freight trains and motor vehicles, authorities in Mexico’s northern state of Nuevo Leon over the weekend suspended some railroad service between Mexico City and Monterrey, the country’s No. 2 industrial center.
Nuevo Leon Gov. Fernando Canales ordered a halt to the passage of trains on the line operated by rail company Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana because of a spate of accidents in recent months.
The suspension affects only products entering the Monterrey metropolitan area. But the suspension is likely to have a strong impact on a number of companies.
TFM is a venture between Mexican shipping company Transportacion Maritima Mexicana and U.S. railroad operator Kansas City Southern Industries.
