Patriotic Painting Plan for Hollywood Sign Stalls

Amid pressure from Hollywood homeowners, the Los Angeles City Council is backing away from a proposal to paint the Hollywood sign red, white and blue.

At the urging of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, Councilman Eric Garcetti introduced a motion last week seeking approval of a plan to paint the landmark sign to look like a giant U.S. flag in time for Veterans Day, Nov. 11. It would be repainted its original shade of white after Thanksgiving.

Although some officials, including Mayor James K. Hahn, supported the idea, homeowners who live near the sign voiced strong opposition. In addition to expressing concerns over security issues, they argued that it would be inappropriate to change the appearance of the historic structure.

Newly elected Councilman Tom LaBonge--who represents the area--also expressed concern that the city had failed to follow the extensive public hearing process necessary to alter the sign.

As a result, Garcetti said he would seek a compromise, such as tying a giant ribbon around the landmark. The council--which delayed action on the matter Friday--is set to take up the issue next week.
