* Campbell Soup Co. said fiscal first-quarter profit fell 16% to $171 million, or 42 cents a share, as it spent more on marketing and on making its products tastier and easier to open. Sales rose 9.4% to $1.73 billion. The results beat analysts’ average estimate of 41 cents, which had been raised from 34 cents in October, according to Thomson Financial/First Call.
* American Skiing Co. agreed to sell its Steamboat ski resort in Steamboat Springs, Colo., as the largest U.S. ski resort operator tries to pay down debt. Terms and the identity of the buyer weren’t disclosed.
