The White House said Tuesday that it has no plans to ask Spain to hand over eight men suspected of involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks.

The stance averts a potential clash between President Bush and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar, who are to meet today over Bush’s plan to create military tribunals that could try people suspected of terrorism.

The U.S. “never asked Spain to extradite anybody,” White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said.
