Federal Budget Blues
Re “OMB Chief’s Blunt Talk Could Point to Trouble,” Nov. 26: One might sympathize with the administration, except that presidents also fish for votes with pork. Their pork, overlapping that of congressional candidates, might equal that of the entire Congress. Every four years, presidential candidates go to Iowa and pander to the heartland, causing taxpayers to support ethanol subsidies. A Democrat running in 2004 would have the dilemma of Iowa versus California regarding ethanol and other farm-subsidy issues.
