Dana Hills in Semifinals of Girls’ Tennis Tournament
Dana Hills High’s No. 1 player, Kady Pooler, won in singles and doubles to lead the Dolphins to a 5-4 upset of No. 3-seeded Torrey Pines in the quarterfinals of the National High School All-American tournament Friday in Newport Beach.
Pooler, No. 4 in the U.S. Tennis Assn.’s girls’ 16 division rankings, defeated Torrey Pines’ No. 1, Lauren Perl, 7-5, in singles and teamed with Amy Vyhnis to beat Perl and Carol Erickson, 7-5. Perl is No. 22 in Southern California girls’ 18s.
Dana Hills’ No. 2 doubles team of Kristen Wilson and Kristin Bronowicki defeated Torrey Pines’ Kelly Duncan and Estee Bartell, 7-5. Dana Hills, ranked No. 2 in Southern Section Division I but unseeded in the 16-team tournament, also beat Atherton Menlo, 6-3, in a first-round match earlier in the day.
The Dolphins face second-seeded Palos Verdes Peninsula, ranked No. 1 in Southern Section Division I and No. 2 in the Times’ poll, in the semifinals at 2:30 p.m. today at Palisades Tennis Club.
Peninsula routed Santa Margarita, 8-1, and beat Newport Harbor, 6-3, to advance. Top-seeded Corona del Mar and fourth-seeded Beverly Hills will play in the other semifinal.
Beverly Hills, the defending tournament champion, edged Palm Desert, 5-4, in the quarterfinals after taking a 4-2 lead in singles play. Riza Zalameda, No. 3 in the USTA girls’ 16s in Southern California, led the Normans with a 6-1 victory over Palm Desert’s Robyn Baker, No. 5 in the same rankings. Zalameda also teamed with Ashley Gleitman to defeat Baker and Casey Cross, 6-2, in doubles.
The championship match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. today at Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club in Newport Beach.
In boys’ water polo:
Corona del Mar advances--Artie Dorr scored twice and goalies Sherwin Kim and Beau Stockstill combined to make 11 saves to help Corona del Mar to a 5-1 victory over San Jose Bellermine in a quarterfinal game of the Southern California Invitational at Heritage Park Aquatic Complex in Irvine.
Corona del Mar (11-0), ranked first by The Times, will play North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake today at 12:30 p.m. in a semifinal at Heritage Park.
Anaheim Servite (11-1) faces Coronado in the other semifinal at 1:40 p.m. The championship game will be at 6:20 p.m. at Heritage Park.
Agoura 9, Simi Valley Royal 8--John Sieminski scored five goals for Royal (7-10, 1-1), but Agoura, ranked fourth in Southern Section Division IV, won the Marmonte League game in double overtime at Agoura.
