Wine of the Week

What, you may ask, is The Marches? It’s a region in the center of Italy between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea where the classic white wine Verdicchio has been made since the 14th century. Castelli dei Jesi is a collection of wine villages not far from Ancona, and one of the two Verdicchio appellations in The Marches.

This example is as ripe and opulent as a Chardonnay but tastes like juicy pears and bitter almonds. Like Italian wines in general, it shows best with food; it’s a terrific match for swordfish or spaghetti with clams. And at this price, this Verdicchio rocks as a party wine.

About $9. Available at The Wine House, (310) 479-3731 and Wally’s, (310) 475-0606 in West L.A.; Beverage Warehouse in Marina del Rey, (310) 306-2822; Vendome Liquor in Toluca Lake, (818) 766-9593; and Woodland Hills Wine Co. in Woodland Hills, (818) 222-1111. If you can’t find this wine, have your local wine store call the distributor, Golden State Wine Co., (818) 365-8607.
