It’s Sharp Display by Los Alamitos
Fountain Valley High opened its bag of tricks on the first play Thursday night against Los Alamitos, but the Griffins didn’t bite. Instead, Los Alamitos turned an interception on the play into a seven-point lead less than two minutes later, then cruised to a 23-13 victory in a Sunset League game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach.
The Barons (5-1) called for a flea-flicker on the first snap, but Casey Clark’s pass was intercepted at midfield by free safety Kevin Van Gorder and returned to the Baron 15-yard line. Three plays later, Quinton Jones scored on a three-yard run and the Griffins led, 7-0. Van Gorder’s interception was the first of four by the Griffins. Brandon Tripp intercepted a Clark pass in the Griffins’ end zone on Fountain Valley’s first drive of the second half and Van Gorder stopped another Baron drive later in the quarter.
Clark, who came into the game with seven touchdown passes and only one interception, threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes to cut the deficit to 10, but threw another pass that was again intercepted by Tripp with 3:28 to play. Despite holding a 7-0 lead after the first quarter, Los Alamitos had only one first down and totaled only 21 yards.
Jones more than tripled the Griffins’ total yardage on the opening play of the second quarter, rambling 52 yards down the sideline before stepping out at the Fountain Valley 42.
After Tripp caught a 23-yard pass from Tim Bessolo, Jones scored on a 21-yard run on the next play, capping the five-play, 94-yard drive.
The Griffins moved ahead, 23-0, late in the third quarter on Jones’ third touchdown of the game, a 10-yard run up the middle.
Jones finished with 170 yards in 19 carries.
