Tourists Are Evacuated From Alcatraz Island
Tourists were evacuated from Alcatraz Island on Friday for the second time in a week after authorities got a phone tip about a “potentially dangerous” situation at the former prison, now one of the city’s most popular tourist sites.
Roger Scott, a spokesman for the National Park Service, which manages Alcatraz, said authorities also closed historic Ft. Point at the south end of Golden Gate Bridge. He declined to release details about the tip, which forced the closure of the tourist sites for the day. Both are expected to reopen Saturday.
