Narbonne Must Forfeit After Brawl
Harbor City Narbonne High , which was involved in a brawl near the end of last week’s Marine League football game against Los Angeles Washington, must forfeit tonight’s game against Wilmington Banning, the City Section rules committee decided Thursday.
Barbara Fiege, the section’s director of athletics, said the seven-member committee watched videotape of the incident and heard presentations from administrators from Narbonne and Washington.
Fiege said the committee determined that all but one Narbonne player left the bench during the melee, which caused officials to call the game with 48 seconds left and Narbonne leading, 41-12. National Federation of High Schools rules state that players who leave the bench during a fight are disqualified from their team’s next game. Fiege also said three players identified by Narbonne have been suspended from competition for one calendar year.
Fiege said videotape showed that the vast majority of Washington players did not leave their bench. Four Washington players who were ejected from the game will not participate in today’s game against San Pedro, Fiege said. Both teams were put on probation through the 2002 season.
