Pope Decries News, Says He’s Praying for Victims
From Times Staff Reports
Pope John Paul II condemned the “unspeakable horror” of the terror attacks, saying he was praying for the victims and their families.
“Commending the victims to almighty God’s mercy, I implore his strength upon all involved in rescue efforts and in caring for the survivors,” John Paul wrote in a letter to President Bush.
The Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, dedicated its front page to the attacks, headlining its delayed afternoon editions: “The Madness of Terror.”
