Mayor Willie Brown vetoed legislation this week that would have restricted big-box retail projects in San Francisco.

Brown said the legislation sent the wrong message to businesses seeking to locate in the city. He called the measure anti-job and said it would be bad for the city’s tax base.

The measure would have required all large retailers except grocers to get a special permit from the city Planning Commission and even the Board of Supervisors in some cases.
