Howell Hoping for a Favored Result

Trainer R C Howell made longshot players happy Friday night when he won the first with 28-1 shot Red Lipstick, a debuting 2-year-old who overcame a slow start to beat six other rookies.

Howell may win another race tonight at Los Alamitos, but the price will be a lot shorter on Sables Dash.

The 3-year-old Dash Thru Traffic filly is the 9-5 favorite in the eighth, a $12,500 allowance at 350 yards.

Owned by Stephanie Turbeville, Sables Dash has won two of seven and could be riding a two-race win streak into this evening if not for a slow beginning on March 7. As the 13-10 favorite that night, she was making her first start in more than six months and wound up missing by a nose to 6-1 shot Shake N Shout.

Rodrigo Aceves, who has ridden the filly in her last two races, has the call again and they will break from the inside in the field of seven.

The picks: 1. Power Trip. 2. Bedas Special. 3. Eraser Reb. 4. Royal Classic Express. 5. Serenity Dash. 6. Robert’s Legend. 7. Hes Spotless. 8. Sables Dash. 9. Rebs Bunny Lane.

Shots in the dark: Mr. Nifty was wide in his first at Los Alamitos after a three-month layoff and could improve in tonight’s sixth. Wholelotta Dash adds Lasix in his second after a long vacation in the eighth.
