Bright Red Borscht, Big Stuffed Legs

The huge baked chicken legs produced at the New York Delicatessen, a Russian shop in West Hollywood, aren’t what they appear to be. Instead of being solid meat, they’re stuffed with ground chicken and mushrooms. Reheat them and cut into slices to make two to three servings.

For starters, try the deli’s borscht, a bright red beet soup that contains potatoes, shredded cabbage and carrots. For dessert, there is cheesecake--not the familiar American-style cheesecake, but patties of farmer cheese that contain no sugar. These are nice served warm, with a spoonful of jam.

Borscht, $3.99 for a 1-quart container; chicken leg stuffed with mushrooms, $4.99 a pound. Individual cheesecakes, 99 cents each at New York Delicatessen, 7754 W. Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, (323) 654-7561.
