Parental OK on Abortion Again Clears House
The House passed a bill Wednesday that would make it a crime for anyone other than a parent to take a teenage girl across state lines for an abortion, but Senate action appears unlikely.
The vote was 260 to 161. It is the third time the House has passed the bill, but the Senate has declined to take the measure up each time. Senate aides say no action on the bill is expected this year.
Twenty-seven states require one or both parents to be notified before a minor can have an abortion. This bill would make it a crime for anyone to take a girl younger than 17 across state lines to circumvent those laws.
Violators could face a $100,000 fine and up to a year in jail.
Backers of the bill, sponsored by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), said parents have to give their consent for any other medical procedure, even getting an aspirin from a school nurse, and should also be involved with abortion.
