The California Supreme Court said Orange County prosecutors may proceed with their case against a trash-hauling executive accused of bilking residents of about $4.2 million.

The justices, ruling 6 to 1, rejected arguments from defendant Jeffrey Hambarian, whose attorneys maintained that Orange County prosecutors had a conflict of interest and could not prosecute him.

Hambarian said that Orange County prosecutors could not try him because an accountant who helped the city of Orange in the fraud case is being retained by county prosecutors and city police in the case.
