No. 1 Chatsworth Falters in Fifth, Falls to Birmingham
For the second consecutive year, Van Nuys Birmingham High’s baseball team has ended Chatsworth’s bid for an undefeated season.
Jose Carrillo’s three-run double keyed a four-run fifth inning that lifted the Patriots past top-ranked Chatsworth, 5-4, Friday night in a West Valley League game at Birmingham.
Junior Garcia came in with the bases loaded in the seventh inning and got Ryan Barba to fly out to end the game.
Last season, Chatsworth was 23-0 until it lost to Birmingham, 5-1. The Chancellors came into Friday’s game 19-0 and 5-0 in league. Pitcher Justin Cassel (7-1) suddenly lost his control with two outs in the fifth, walking three consecutive batters. Carrillo then delivered his double to wipe out a 3-1 deficit.
Raul Campos struck out 10 and allowed five hits in 61/3 innings for Birmingham (18-2, 4-1).
