Convict Gets 9 More Years in Murder Plot
A Glendale man serving a 65-year federal prison term was sentenced to an extra nine years behind bars Monday for his role in a murder-for-hire plot.
Garen Zakarian, 38, and his brother, Archak, 33, pleaded guilty last year in Los Angeles federal court to soliciting an FBI informant to kill Artur Simonian, 37.
Authorities said the brothers feared that Simonian might upset their plans to concoct a bogus alibi enabling Garen Zakarian to win a new trial in the 1994 robbery-murder of a Glendale travel agent.
The alibi witness was to have been Simonian’s estranged wife, Kristine Arutunyan, 32, who was having an affair with Archak Zakarian.
