A Silicon Valley lawmaker withdrew a bill Wednesday that would have limited the state’s ability to offer free electronic tax filing.

Assemblywoman Rebecca Cohn (D-Saratoga) withdrew AB 2781, which would have banned the Franchise Tax Board from offering a free electronic tax filing service that performs math calculations and searches tax tables for taxpayers.

The computer software industry, led by Mountain View, Calif.-based Intuit, supported Cohn’s bill. The industry argued that free government tax filing competes with private electronic services that typically charge fees of $10 to $30.

Cohn withdrew her bill rather than accept amendments that she said would compromise privacy.
