Rubbing Shoulders With the Ritz

This is one of 27 cottages built starting in 1920 and owned by the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. Known as Ferncroft Cottage, the house was remodeled in 1926 by architect Sylvanus Marston.

By 1996, it was one of 13 cottages still standing when the hotel sold the cottages to private owners. This one was purchased by Cheryll and Bud (William) Wegge, who owns Wegge Motors in Pasadena. She owns an interior design firm.

The Wegges completely refurbished the cottage, which is in a gated community adjoining the hotel. The hotel, now known as the Ritz-Carlton, also underwent changes.

The Wegges are planning to renovate another cottage that is slightly larger and not fully remodeled. The couple need more space to accommodate their married children and their families when they come to visit.

About this home: The Wegges installed copper plumbing, two-zone heating and air conditioning; electrical wiring; speakers; and recessed lighting.

Cheryll Wegge, a designer for 32 years, applied her experience to the interiors. Among her touches are the many imported and antique materials used in the finish work. There’s a stone sink once used in a castle; French tiles that decorate a fireplace mantel; and antique limestone floors in the entry. Blocks of stone from France were used for a fireplace surround, and there’s a hand-painted mural on a multi-coved ceiling. Pavers from an old winery in France accent the kitchen.

Asking price: $2.15 million.

Size: The 3,495-square-foot house has two bedroom suites and a two-car garage with a gated driveway.

Features: The French Regency-style home also has a library, a great room, a wine cellar, three fireplaces, an office/studio/exercise room, a garden retreat and free access to the Ritz-Carlton’s tennis courts, pool and spa. Food and maid services are available for a fee.
