Thailand’s health minister is urging stores to stop selling giant African cockroaches, warning that the popular pets could become a health risk if let loose.

Thai newspapers report that businessmen have brought Madagascar hissing cockroaches from Africa and are selling them as pets for $1.19 apiece in Bangkok.

Minister Sudarat Keyuraphun said the 2 1/2-inch bugs breed quickly, with 40 to 60 offspring in 60 days. They live up to three years, so if they escape, they will be very difficult to control, she said.
