Hate-Crime Trial to Be Held in Cross-Burning
From Staff and Wire Reports
Two people will be tried on felony hate crime charges for allegedly burning a cross at the home of a black police officer in Lompoc.
A Superior Court judge ruled Monday that Jayne Marie Sharp, 42, of Lompoc and Charles Thomas Matkin, 38, of Santa Maria should be held for trial.
They are accused of burning a 6-foot cross in a flower bed at Officer Shawn Fuggs’ house July 15. Authorities say it was retaliation for the earlier arrest of Sharp’s husband, Steven, on suspicion of driving without a valid license.
