From Times Wire Reports

Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers agreed to develop a government that would give the rebel group regional autonomy, a breakthrough capping months of efforts to end 19 years of fighting.

The Tamil Tigers have been waging a battle for independence since 1983, but they gave up the demand just ahead of the third round of peace talks in Oslo.

Now both sides have agreed to pursue peace by allowing the Tamil-dominated regions in the north and east of the country to govern themselves autonomously, according to a draft of a joint statement.
