Los Angeles police shot and killed a man Thursday evening after he pointed a gun at officers, police said.

Officers on routine patrol had just crossed Cesar Chavez Avenue at Cornwell Street about 5:45 p.m. when they saw the man pointing the gun, said Lt. Gordon Wade.

One of the officers fired, and the man died at the scene. Wade said officers recovered his gun.

The man’s relatives said they didn’t believe he had a gun. They said that the man had grown up in Boyle Heights and been involved in gangs, but that he had left that lifestyle and had been searching for a job.
