Why Can’t Jeanie Buss Get the Respect She Deserves?
In spite of her being an “Heiress Apparent” (“Buss--The Next Generation,” by Steve Springer, Nov. 24), Jeanie Buss apparently deserves no more respect from The Times than if it were a supermarket tabloid and she were a woman of the ‘50s who had somehow stepped out of her expected role as a chattel wife. How flattering that she is “best known for being Jerry’s daughter, a former Playboy model and girlfriend of Laker coach Phil Jackson.”
On the front page of The Times on the same day was a story on Hindu widows who are not educated, empowered, cared for or cared about. How nice that our poor little rich girl, intelligent enough to be “poised to become a powerhouse in the NBA,” will not have to face being destitute in her unmarried state like her Indian sisters. Nevertheless, it seems that she does not deserve much more respect from Springer than a Third World culture gives [its] widows. Apparently there is only interest in culling readership at the expense of the dignity of the woman who had the courtesy to give Springer an interview.

Springer’s story was superb. By this point in Jeanie Buss’ career, she has done it all--and entirely on her own terms. I wish her continued success.
