Borrowed Postal Bin Can’t Hitch a Ride Home

I don’t wonder that many of those nice postal baskets are missing (“Return to Sender. Please.” editorial, Dec. 15). I recently picked up my vacation mail in one (the collection and care of vacation mail is one of the nicest things the post office has done, in my opinion), and when I had emptied it at home, I put the basket outside on the mailbox for the carrier to pick up. The next day it was still there, and the next. I thought perhaps the carrier couldn’t see it because he didn’t leave his vehicle when he delivered the mail, so I put it on top of the box where he couldn’t open the box without moving the basket aside. Still there! I waited the next day, watching him deliver the mail and fill the box, and when he started to drive away, still leaving the empty basket, I yelled at him and asked, “Don’t you want to take the empty basket?” He looked pained and said, “Yes.” And he took it.
