San Clemente Girls Reach Soccer Final
Freshman McCall Zerboni scored in the second half of overtime to give No. 2-seeded San Clemente a 1-0 victory Tuesday over third-seeded Anaheim Esperanza in a girls’ Division I semifinal match at Esperanza.
Zerboni converted her team-leading 13th goal from 13 yards in the 92nd minute of play after taking a pass from senior midfielder Kristen Moore in a crowd on the right side, just inside the penalty box.
Zerboni’s goal sends the Tritons (20-3-3) into a division final for the first time.
“Knowing McCall, I knew she’d probably be there,” said Moore, who has had two goals and an assist in the Tritons’ last three games.
San Clemente will face South Coast League rival Capistrano Valley, which upset the top-seeded team, Aliso Niguel, 1-0, in sudden-death overtime.
San Clemente defeated Capistrano Valley twice in league play, 1-0 and 2-0.
Esperanza (21-3-4) had its 16-game unbeaten streak ended and lost in the semifinals for the third year in a row.
