Is Davis Playing Fair With Energy Contracts?
Re “State Disputes Long-Term Power Pacts,” Feb. 25: I have never begrudged athletes who are rewarded with multimillion-dollar contracts for playing sports on the professional level. At the same time, I have neither respect nor empathy for players who sign long-term contracts to ensure financial security for themselves and then, when they have outstanding seasons or discover other players are making more money, refuse to honor their signatures and demand to renegotiate their deals.
Now, Gov. Gray Davis is pulling the same scam with power contracts and proving he is not a man of his word. Since we cannot trade our “holdout” governor to another state for draft choices or a legislator to be named later, we’ll have to put Davis on waivers for the purpose of giving him his unconditional release in the next election.

Re “Davis Seeks Reversal of Power Deals,” Feb. 24: It is about time that Davis sought to trash the long-term energy contracts that gouge the people of California under the so-called energy crisis--which is nothing but a conspiracy masterminded by Enron, acquiesced to by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and encouraged and winked at by Bush-Cheney oil cliques.
