Wizards Rattle Earthquakes

Igor Simutenkov scored in the 86th minute to lift the Kansas City Wizards to a 2-1 victory over the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night in front of 11,530 at Kansas City, Mo.

Simutenkov took a midfield pass from Kerry Zavagnin about 30 yards from the goal and shot through the legs of goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

The league-leading Earthquakes (12-7-2), who lost their fourth road game in a row, opened the scoring in the 25th minute on defender Eddie Robinson’s header off a Richard Mulrooney corner kick.

Stephen Armstrong also scored for Kansas City (7-6-7).

Dallas 2, Colorado 2--Steve Morrow scored with 10 seconds left in regulation to pull the Burn (8-4-7) even with the Rapids (9-9-3) in front of 13,143 at Denver.

New England 1, Washington 0--Jay Heaps scored in the 16th minute, and the Revolution (7-12-1) won in front of 24,240 at Washington as D.C. United (6-11-2) saw its scoreless streak reach 331 minutes.

Chicago 3, New York-New Jersey 0--Ante Razov scored twice and Jim Curtin had his first goal as the Fire (8-8-3) defeated the MetroStars (9-9-2) in front of 14,576 at Naperville, Ill.

Washington 1, San Diego 0--Abby Wambach scored in the 67th minute off a pass from Mia Hamm to give the Freedom (8-5-5) a victory over the Spirit (4-9-4) in front of 24,240 at Washington.

Atlanta 1, Carolina 0--Charmaine Hooper scored in the 68th minute as the Beat (9-7-1) earned its first victory over the Courage (10-4-3) in front of 6,810 at Atlanta to remain three points ahead of San Jose for the last playoff spot.

San Jose 4, New York 1--Katia scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the CyberRays (7-6-4) to a victory over the Power (3-14-1) in front of 7,183 at San Jose.

Philadelphia 1, Boston 1--Allison Kemp scored her first goal of the season in the 90th minute as the Breakers (4-8-7) tied the Charge (10-2-5) in front of 6,017 at Boston.
