* Humana Inc. said second-quarter profit rose to $45.4 million, or 27 cents a share, from $25.1 million, or 15 cents, a year earlier. Revenue advanced 13% to $2.8 billion from $2.5 billion.
* El Paso Electric Co. will be allowed to continue selling electricity and natural gas at market prices, U.S. regulators said.
* Rayovac Corp. agreed to buy the consumer-battery business of German rival Varta for $262 million in cash as the third-largest U.S battery maker tries to boost sales overseas.
* Park Place Entertainment Corp. said second-quarter income doubled, aided by a gain from the sale of its stake in an Australian casino and higher profits at its New Jersey and Nevada casinos. The owner of the Caesars casino chain said net income rose to $96 million, or 31 cents a share. Revenue rose 2.3% to $1.2 billion.
* U.S. retail gasoline prices fell 0.3 cent to $1.407 a gallon in the week ended Monday, the U.S. Energy Department reported. Regular gasoline prices were highest on the West Coast, where they fell 0.9 cent to $1.532 a gallon.
