The Wolf fire in Los Padres National Forest near Ojai was 85% contained late Wednesday, and fire officials were anticipating total containment by early Friday evening.
For a third consecutive day Wednesday, firefighters held the blaze to 21,278 acres while a fleet of helicopters dropped loads of water and fire retardant, said Joe Pasinato, a U.S. Forest Service spokesman.
More than 1,200 firefighters were fighting the fire, but officials were gradually releasing personnel, many of whom will be reassigned to major fires in Colorado.
Since the Wolf Fire started June 1, the cost of fighting it has reached $13.2 million.
