The owner of the Anchorage Aces of the West Coast Hockey League said the $2.3-million bid received Thursday for the team in an auction on EBay Inc. was a mistake, and the team is still for sale.

Mike Cusack Jr. said that the bid was placed by a student who was curious about the auction. The student’s identity wasn’t disclosed.

Cusack said he’s going to re-list the team on EBay.

Cusack is trying to sell the team after the Aces filed for Chapter 11 protection last month with about $2 million in debt.

Cusack, who has owned the Aces since their inception in 1995, posted the team on EBay on Saturday. He had gotten only one bid for $1.5 million through Wednesday evening, then three bids came in that night before the final offer.

If the team sells for the $2.3 million Cusack is seeking, it would be the second-biggest transaction ever for EBay and the first sports team that would ever be sold on the site, an EBay spokesman said.
